IOWA CITY – Two members University of Iowa men’s gymnastics team were named 2009 all-America Scholar-Athletes. Former Hawkeye standout Diego Mercado-Austin and senior Jonathan Buese were both honored.
Mercado-Austin, from Tijuana, Mexico, was named to the 2008-09 academic all-Big Ten team and will graduate in December with a Management & Organizations degree.
Buese, a Gainesville, FL, native, qualified for the NCAA Championships in all-around last season. He led the team on parallel bar (14.20), high bar (14.50), and all-around (84.05). The 2009 team co-captain has a double major in Economics and French.
The College Gymnastics Association has honored 130 individual gymnasts as 2009 All-America Scholar-Athletes.
