The University of Iowa soccer team gave the seniors a memorable win for senior night Friday by downing Big Ten foe Michigan (5-8-5) at the Iowa Soccer Complex. The Hawkeyes didn’t let the wind and rain deter their effort, and recorded the win with 2-1 decision.
The Hawkeyes struck first in the 11th minute when Mandy Heimann sent one in. Michigan goalkeeper Haley Kopmeyer made the stop, but sophomore Alyssa Cosnek was waiting for the rebound and hit the target for the score.
Michigan wasted no time in responding to Iowa’s attack. The Wolverines netted the equalizer off a breakaway run by Kristen Goncalves in the 15th minute.
Iowa’s attacking third continued to threaten Michigan’s defensive third. Senior co-captain Jackie Kaeding sent one in at the 16:52 mark. The Hawkeyes outshot the opponent four to one for the remainder of the first half.
The second half was hard fought, but the Black and Gold attack didn’t slow as Iowa challenged Kopmeyer four times before netting one in the 64th minute. Sophomore Morgan Showalter had possession of the ball just over the midfield line and fired one in with pinpoint precision. Showalter’s shot found the top left corner of the goal for the tiebreaker.
The home team never looked back, making three consecutive stops on Michigan corner kicks in the 75th and 76th minutes. Iowa goalkeeper Emily Moran made the final stop in the 84th minute, shutting down Michigan’s Courtney Mercier.
Showalter led Iowa’s offensive attack with three shots, one on goal and one goal. Moran made two stops in the contest.
Head Coach Ron Rainey and the Iowa squad welcomes Michigan State for the final home game of the 2009 season Sunday. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. with the parents of team members being honored prior to kickoff.
