Two Hawkeyes Earn Big Ten Weekly Honors

Nov. 2, 2009

IOWA CITY, IA – – The Big Ten Conference today named University of Iowa back Meghan Beamesderfer co-Defensive Player of the Week and named midfielder Sarah Drake Freshman of the Week. It is Beamesderfer’s fourth career weekly honor and it is Drake’s second career honor.

Beamesderfer, sharing the honor with Lindsay Quintiliani of Ohio State, was an integral part of the Iowa defense and attack in a pair of non-conference road victories this weekend as the Hawkeyes defeated both No. 11 James Madison and American University in Washington, D.C. Friday against the Dukes, Beamesderfer scored once and led a strong defensive effort against the Dukes in a 3-2 victory. Then on Saturday, the senior had another goal and was a part of a defense that held American to just one goal in a 2-1 victory.

Drake, the leading goal scorer for the Black and Gold this season with eight, clinches her second Freshman of the Week honor of the year. The Ann Arbor, MI, native scored once Friday against James Madison and then repeated that effort at American on Saturday afternoon.

The Hawkeyes head to the Big Ten Tournament as the No. 4 seed. Iowa faces Michigan Thursday at 10 a.m. (CT) in the first round on the campus of Michigan State University.
