Midlands Competition Underway

EVANSTON, IL — Competition is underway at the 47th annual Midlands Championships, hosted by Northwestern University at Welsh Ryan Arena in Evanston, IL. Today’s competition includes the first session, which started at 9:30 a.m. (CT), and second session, which will start at 7 p.m. Wednesday’s competition includes the third session, which starts at noon, and the championship finals at 7 p.m. Fans can follow the tournament through Northwestern’s Midlands Championships Central web site at http://nusports.cstv.com/sports/m-wrestl/spec-rel/nw-2009-midlands-championships.html. Updated brackets and team standings will be posted throughout the tournament.

Ten University of Iowa wrestlers earned tournament seeds. Two-time Midlands champion Brent Metcalf (149) and defending champion Jay Borschel (174) each earned the top seed at their respective weight classes. Iowa has three seeded wrestlers at 141, as senior Dan LeClere is second, senior Joe Slaton is fourth and sophomore Montell Marion is ninth. LeClere and Slaton both won Midlands titles in 2007, and Slaton is competing unattached at the event. Defending 165-pound champion Ryan Morningstar is seeded third at his weight class, as are redshirt freshman Matt McDonough (125) and senior Phillip Keddy (184). Junior Chad Beatty is seeded fifth at 197 and junior Jake Kerr is 10th at 157.

Wednesday night’s finals will also be aired on AM-800 KXIC radio. The Big Ten Network will air Wednesday’s finals Sunday at 7 p.m. (CT).
