MINNEAPOLIS, MN – The University of Iowa women’s tennis team fell in its first Big Ten match of the season against No. 52 Minnesota Friday night, 6-1.
Jessica Young and Kelcie Klockenga teamed up to defeat their opponents in doubles play. The 6-1 pair took down Jackie Sperling and Doron Koprivica, 8-5.
Three singles matches went to the third set tie-break. Sophomore Sonja Molnar fell to Tijana Koprivica in the first set, 2-6, but battled back to win the second and third matches, 6-4, 10-7 for Iowa’s only win. Merel Beelen also fell in the first set to Alexa Palen, 3-6. Beelen rebounded to win the second set, 6-4, but could not hold on in the third, falling 8-10. Young was the last Hawkeye to force a third set tie-break. After losing 4-6 in the first set to Muravnik, Young fought back to win the second, 7-6(7). Muravnik claimed the third set, 10-3, for the win.
The Hawkeyes will be back in action tomorrow when they face Princeton. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
