Hawkeyes To Compete In Black & Gold Alumni Match

March 4, 2010

IOWA CITY, IA – The University of Iowa men’s golf team will travel to Dallas, TX, to take part in the third annual Black and Gold Alumni Match, March 6. The Hawkeyes will compete against Iowa alumni on the 18-hole “Dallas” course at Dallas Country Club.

Competition will be 36 holes, with the top four scores from each team being counted. Competing for the Hawkeyes will be juniors Brad Hopfinger and Vince India, sophomores Barrett Kelpin, Brad George, Chris Brant and James Reiss and freshman Ryan Marks. Captain for the alumni squad is Scott Carpenter. Carpenter was a four-year letterman for the Black and Gold from 1993-96. He is also the brother of Three Carpenter, general manager of the DCC.

“It’s really important for us to get out and have an opportunity to compete before our spring break tournament,” said Head Coach Mark Hankins. “It will also be a nice opportunity for the guys to work on their game and play a competitive tournament against some pretty good players, our alumni.”

The beautiful par 70 “Dallas” course at the DCC plays to 6,266 yards of Bermuda grass from the championship tees. The course was designed by Tom Bendelow and Jay Morrish from the American Society of Golf Course Architects and opened in 1896.

Saturday’s play will be set up with a competitive atmosphere, but the alumni match is an exhibition, as well as an opportunity for current athletes to learn from and interact with former members of the program. The DCC is home to one of the finest courses in Texas, and will prove to be a difficult, yet enjoyable learning experience for Hankins’ squad.

“We’ve been lucky enough to play at the Dallas Country Club the last two years,” added Hankins. “It’s a really good golf course for us early in the season. It’s a difficult course, but it will allow the guys to make some birdies and feel good about their game.”

The Hawkeyes will return to competitive action March 21-23 when they travel to Marana, AZ, for the prestigious Callaway Collegiate Match-Play.

Iowa previously finished third at the 2010 Big Ten Men’s Match-Play Championship in Coral Springs, FL. The event will be aired in high-definition March 14 at 2:30 p.m. (CT) on the Big Ten Network.
