LAWRENCE, KS – The University of Iowa baseball team defeated Kansas, 5-3, in the nightcap of a doubleheader at Hogland Park Friday night. In the win, sophomore Phil Schreiber went six quality innings. The Hawkeyes recorded their second errorless game of the season.
Iowa’s pitching was solid, allowing only three earned runs. Schreiber went six innings allowing only one run on five hits with two strikeouts. The righty earned his first win of the season. The Hawkeye bullpen featured Patrick Schatz, Michael Jacobs and Kevin Lee. Each pitcher went one inning, allowing only two hits and two earned runs amongst them. Lee picked up his third save, slamming the door shut with the tying run on base in the ninth inning.
“We played really well after a tough loss,” Head Coach Jack Dahm said. “I felt Jarred Hippen threw the ball pretty well in the first game but we didn’t make the plays for him and we didn’t swing the bats like we have been. I was impressed by the way we bounced back in the second game. Phil set the tone on the mound and did a great job . To add to it, we played outstanding defense the entire game.”
The Hawkeye offense featured six multi-hit performances and out hit the Jayhawks, 13-7. Dallas Burke, Phil Keppler, Kurtis Muller, Mike McQuillan, Dan Sheppard and Trevor Willis all recorded at least two hits. Muller continued his hit streak to 18 games, dating back to last season.
After three scoreless innings, the Black and Gold (4-3) took an early 2-0 lead in the fourth. Sheppard picked up a one-out single and scored on a Willis triple to right field.
The Jayhawks (5-3) scored one in the bottom of the fourth to trail 2-1. The inning featured a Casey Lytle leadoff double and run scored.
The Hawkeyes added insurance runs in the fifth, scoring two, to lead 4-1. With one out, McQuillan singled, Ryan Durant reached base on a hit by pitch and Burke loaded the bases on a base on balls. Keppler hit an RBI single and Sheppard drove home Durant on a single.
Iowa scored its final run in the sixth. McQuillan drove in Muller on an RBI single to center field.
Kansas scored one in the seventh and once in the ninth to lose, 5-3. In the bottom of the ninth, the Jayhawks got one run on two hits and left two on base.
The Hawkeyes will compete next tomorrow at Hogland Park in the third game of four. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
