March 26, 2010

DELRAY BEACH, FL – The University of Iowa men’s golf team is in ninth place after one round of competition at Florida Atlantic’s Spring Break Championship. The Hawkeyes are 11-strokes over par after firing a team score of 295 through 18 holes. Illinois is leading the 16-team field with a 282 (-2).

“I felt like we had to re-acclimate to walking and playing a full round of medal-play this afternoon,” said Head Coach Mark Hankins. “All five guys had good consistency, but we really didn’t have a low round to get us where we needed to be.”

Barrett Kelpin led the Black and Gold with an opening round at one-over par. The sophomore fired a 72 and is in a tie for 15th. Junior Brad Hopfinger carded a 73 (+2) and is tied for 25th while Vince India is in a tie for 33rd. The junior picked up four birdies through 18 and posted a 74 (+3). Additionally, sophomores Chris Brant and Brad George finished the day in a tie for 55th with scores of 76 (+5).

“Overall, all five guys battled tough and we just couldn’t get it going today,” added Hankins. “It’s a three round tournament. We’ll maintain our game plan and continue to push forward.”

Competition will continue from Gleneagles Country Club Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. (CT). Follow the live tournament coverage at golfstatresults.com.
