IOWA CITY, IA – The University of Iowa women’s tennis team could not overcome the No. 8 Michigan team Saturday afternoon. The teams faced each other on the Klotz outdoor courts for the Hawkeyes’ first home outdoor competition of the season. Iowa fell to the Wolverines, 6-1.
The doubles teams struggled in the windy atmosphere, unable to secure the doubles point for Iowa. Whitney Taney and Rika Tatsuno is the first doubles team to knock off Sonja Molnar and Merel Beelen in dual play, collecting an 8-2 victory. Jessica Young and Kelcie Klockenga teamed up to face Mimi Nguyen and Michelle Sulahian, falling 8-3, while Lynne Poggensee-Wei and Alexis Dorr took on Tania Mahatani and Denise Muresan. Michigan earned the win, 8-3, in the final doubles match as well.
Klockenga pulled through for the Hawkeyes in singles competition. The senior played in the fifth spot, defeating Mahatani, 7-5, 4-6, 10-7. Young, Poggensee-Wei and Dorr all forced a third set, but the Wolverines were too tough on the court, taking all three wins.
Iowa will look to rebound Sunday at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. The Hawkeyes host Michigan State in an 11 a.m. match. Live stats can be found on www.hawkeyesports.com.
