Iowa Earns 6-1 Win Over Penn State

University Park, PA– The 26th ranked University of Iowa women’s tennis team improved to 12-3 overall and 2-2 in conference play with a win Friday night over Penn State. The Hawkeyes posted a 6-1 victory over the Nittany Lions.

Sonja Molnar and Merel Beelen, ranked 15th in the country, faced Amy Simidian and Maria Prishlavk. The Hawkeye duo earned the win with an 8-4 decision. Lynne Poggensee-Wei and Alexis Dorr dominated their challengers, Sarah Lotto and Michaela Stracer, 8-1.

Molnar, recently moved up the national rankings to 55th, faced Simidian in singles play as well. The two faced off in the first spot with Molnar earning the 6-4, 6-2 win. Beelen was also successful in singles competition, taking down Sarah Henderson, 6-2, 6-1.

Jessica Young pulled through in her first match, taking the 7-5 decision over Denisa Zobeideh before finishing the match with a 6-2 second set. Kelcie Klockenga defeated Lotto, 7-5, 6-4, and Alexis Dorr downed Stracer, 6-3, 7-5.

Iowa travels to Columbus, OH, for a match Sunday. The Hawkeyes and Buckeyes are set to begin at 10 a.m. (CT).
