IOWA CITY, IA – The University of Iowa women’s tennis team lost Saturday to ninth-ranked Northwestern. The 21st-ranked Hawkeyes fell to the Wildcats, 7-0.
Senior Merel Beelen and Sophomore Sonja Molnar were the only Hawkeyes to find success on the courts today versus the harsh competition. The 14th ranked duo defeated 21st ranked Lauren Liu and Elena Chernyakova, 8-3.
Molnar nearly pulled out an upset at the number one singles position over No 13 Maria Mosolova, pushing the first set to a 7-6 (7-2) tie breaker. Molnar couldn’t prevail,l however, and fell 6-1 in the second set.
The Hawkeyes will be back in action tomorrow, taking on Wisconsin. The match in Madison is set to begin at 11 a.m. with live stats available on hawkeyesports.com.
