Hawkeyes Take Down Badgers

MADISON, WI – The University of Iowa women’s tennis team faced first year Head Coach Katie Dougherty’s alma mater Sunday in Madison, WI. The Hawkeyes posted a 5-2 win over the Badgers for the team’s fifth conference win of the season.

Iowa’s number one doubles team, Merel Beelen and Sonja Molnar, faced Hannah Berner and Alaina Trgovich. The 14th ranked Hawkeye duo recorded an 8-3 victory. Senior Kelcie Klockenga and junior Jessica Young played in the third spot, edging Lauren Gruber and Jessica Seyferth, 8-6, to earn Iowa the doubles point.

Young was the first Iowa player to earn a singles point, downing her opponent, Seyferth, 6-3, 6-2. Molnar, ranked 67th nationally, earned a point for the Hawkeyes in singles play as well, taking down Trgovich, 7-6, 6-3. Klockenga recorded a 6-4, 6-3 win over Angela Chupa in the fifth spot, and junior Alexis Dorr produced a 6-3, 6-3 win over Kathleen Saltarelli in the sixth spot.

The Hawkeyes improved to 15-5 overall and 5-4 in conference play. Iowa hosts Purdue April 23rd at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. The final regular season match of the season is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
