Hawkeyes In Ninth After Round One at NCAA Regional

May 20, 2010

NOTRE DAME, IN — The University of Iowa men’s golf team is in ninth place through one round at the 2010 NCAA Central Regional in Notre Dame, IN. The seventh-seeded Hawkeyes fired an opening round of 288 (+8) while Stanford is leading the 14-team field with a three-under par 277. Competition is being held on the par 70 Warren Golf Course on the campus of Notre Dame.

Three Hawkeye golfers are all knotted up for 21st after 18 holes of play. Juniors Vince India and Brad Hopfinger, along with sophomore Chris Brant, all fired a day one total of 71 (+1). India carded four birdies in his opening round while Hopfinger and Brant each posted 13 holes at even par. Sophomore Brad George shot a 75 (+5) and is tied for 52nd while sophomore Barrett Kelpin is tied for 63rd after carding a 77 (+7).

“We played the front side well today, but let a few shots go later in the round,” said Head Coach Mark Hankins. “We had three guys play well, but you can’t live on three scores, the field is just too tight. We need five good scores.”

The No. 38 Hawkeyes will return to the links for the second round of golf beginning at 7 a.m. (CT) Friday morning. Fans can follow regional action live at golfstatresults.com.

“You can’t win the tournament on day one,” added Hankins. “All we can do is stick to what we do, play with a little more determination and go out and improve each day. If each guy focuses on improving his individual score, success will come.”
