CHAPEL HILL, NC – – The 19th-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team lost to No. 6 Wake Forest Saturday in its season opener, 3-1. The game was held at Francis E. Henry Stadium on the campus of the University of North Carolina as part of the annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge.

The Hawkeyes and Demon Deacons, competing for the ninth straight year in the Challenge, battled to no score at the end of the first half. Sophomore Kathleen McGraw recorded four first-half saves to lead the Iowa defense.

Wake Forest ended the scoring drought with a goal at the 38:58 mark in the second half. Lizzie Rae scored from just inside the circle to give the Demon Deacons a 1-0 advantage. Rae added another goal at the 49:36 mark to give Wake Forest a 2-0 lead. Minutes later, Jess McFadyen scored to push the Demon Deacon advantage to 3-0.

Freshman Danielle Peirson recorded her first career Hawkeye goal moments later, scoring off a penalty corner. The goal was assisted by freshman Marike Stribos and sophomore Geena Lesiak. The Black and Gold applied pressure in the final minutes of regulation but Wake Forest held on for a 3-1 win.

Iowa will conclude play tomorrow in the annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The Hawkeyes will battle top-ranked and defending national champion North Carolina at 11 a.m. central time.
