CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – – The 19th-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team lost at top-ranked North Carolina Sunday, 3-0, in the final day of the annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The game was held at Francis E. Henry Stadium in Chapel Hill, N.C.

The Hawkeyes and Tar Heels, competing for the ninth straight year in the Challenge, battled to no score in the opening minutes of play. North Carolina, the defending national champion, scored at the 18:57 mark to grab an early advantage. After the initial shot off the penalty corner was saved by sophomore Kathleen McGraw, Caitlin Van Sickle knocked in the rebound in front of the cage.

The Tar Heels were awarded a penalty corner in the 30th minute. They took advantage, scoring their second goal of the day. North Carolina added another goal moments later to push its lead to 3-0. Neither team was able to score in the second half, giving the Tar Heels a 3-0 victory.

Iowa will return to Iowa City for its home opener Sept. 5. The Hawkeyes will host Miami (OH) at Grant Field at 1 p.m. Admission is free.
