IOWA CITY, Iowa – – The 19th-ranked University of Iowa field hockey defeated Brown Monday at Grant Field, 5-0.

“We definitely had a much better presence than we had yesterday,” said Head Coach Tracey Griesbaum. “Overall, top to bottom, I think our structure was better. There was a stronger attacking mentality. I thought yesterday we were back on our heels. Today, I thought we came out with a lot more aggression.”

The Black and Gold applied pressure in the early moments of the first half, recording eight shots on goal in the first 10 minutes. The Brown defense held tough despite the Hawkeyes’ offensive push, and held Iowa scoreless.

However, the Hawkeye offense broke through moments later. At the 17:22 mark, sophomore Geena Lesiak found fellow sophomore Jessica Barnett who slammed home her first goal of the season from the top of the circle. At the 28:42 mark, the Hawkeye offense struck again. Junior Becca Spengler scored her first goal of the season to give Iowa a 2-0 halftime lead. The Hawkeyes dominated the first half statistically, recording 12 shots and six penalty corners. Brown recorded only one shot and zero corners.

Iowa kept the pressure on in the second half. Barnett scored her second goal of the day at the 46:42 mark, giving Iowa a 3-0 advantage. Spengler added her second goal of the afternoon minutes later, pushing the Iowa lead to 4-0. Kim Scraper recorded her first career goal moments later in the 59th minute of play. The freshman chipped in a beautiful goal after Brown’s goalkeeper saved her initial attempt. For the game, Iowa recorded 27 shots and 10 penalty corners. Brown tallied only four total shots and zero penalty corners.

“Today was a huge win for us,” said Barnett. “From here we just need to bring it every day in practice, working on fundamentals. We’re young, so building up every day is going to be key.”

Iowa returns to action Sept. 11. The Hawkeyes travel to Kent, OH, to face No. 20 Stanford at Noon. Iowa will then battle Kent State Sunday at 11 a.m. Both times are central.
