Game Highlights

IOWA CITY, Iowa – – The University of Iowa field hockey team defeated Ball State Saturday in Iowa City, 2-0. The match was held at Grant Field.

“It was a solid win today,” said Head Coach Tracey Griesbaum. “We outshot them and had more corners than them. If we could have been a little bit cleaner with our attacking early in the game it could have led to more goals for us. But the hard part about this type of game is just sticking to your plan and not getting frustrated, and I thought the team did a good job of that today.”

The Hawkeyes, 2-1 at Grant Field, applied offensive pressure throughout the first half but were unable to come away with a goal. In the first half, Iowa recorded nine shots and four penalty corners while Ball State managed only two shots and zero penalty corners.

Iowa continued to apply pressure in the second half. At the 60:14 mark, the Hawkeye offense broke through. Kim Scraper dribbled in close and chipped in the first goal of the game. The freshman now has two goals on the season.

Senior Sarah Pergine added some insurance moments later. Pergine scored from close range to give the Hawkeyes a 2-0 advantage at the 64:34 mark. The Iowa defense held strong the rest of the way and Iowa won 2-0.

Iowa (2-5) returns to action Sept. 24. The Black and Gold will travel to East Lansing, MI to battle Big Ten rival and fifth-ranked Michigan State. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. central time.
