ST. THOMAS, USVI – – The Iowa men’s basketball team enjoyed a day off today after recording a 55-47 victory over Alabama last night in the Paradise Jam. The Hawkeyes had their best defensive effort of the season, limiting the Crimson Tide to only 47 points, and 13% shooting from beyond the arc.

Iowa will now face Long Beach State in the tournament’s fourth-place game Monday at 2:30 p.m. (CT) at the Sports and Fitness Center. The 49ers beat Saint Peter’s 68-56 yesterday to advance to play the Hawkeyes.

The team was able to enjoy a little fun this afternoon on its day off. The tournament hosts organized a two-hour snorkeling trip for the team today. The players had a great time and were able to do something many of them have never done before.

Redshirt junior Devon Archie, who has provided a spark off the bench the last two games, enjoyed the free time with his teammates.

“The snorkel trip was amazing,” said Archie. “This has been a great trip so far. We’ve really enjoyed our time down here.”

Sophomore Cully Payne was hesitant to get in the water, but was glad he did.

“This was a great opportunity and I enjoyed the snorkeling a lot,” said the Hawkeye point guard. “I saw a lot of fish up close. It was pretty cool.”

“The snorkeling was a lot of fun. We saw a lot of fish; one group even saw a stingray,” said junior Jordan Stoermer. “Hopefully we can continue what we did last night, get another win and come back to Iowa City with two victories.”

The Hawkeyes begin their preparation for Long Beach State tonight with a two-hour practice at a local high school. Iowa has only played Long Beach State, once before – beating the 49ers 101-79 on Dec. 4, 1993.
