Seton Hall Edges Hawkeyes, 2-0

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – – The Iowa baseball team lost another nail-bitter Sunday afternoon, this time falling 2-0 to Seton Hall at the Naimoli Complex. Sunday was Iowa’s third game in the Big East/Big Ten Challenge.

Seton Hall (1-2) starter Joe Dirocco and Ryan Harvey combined for a two-hit shutout. Dirocco got the victory throwing eight innings, allowing two hits and striking out six Hawkeyes. Iowa junior Kasey Carling broke up Dirocco’s no-hit bid with a single up the middle in the bottom of the sixth inning. Harvey pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to earn the save.

The Pirates scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings off Hawkeye lefty Matt Dermody. A.J. Rusbarsky knocked in the first run with a bases loaded RBI single to center field in the fifth frame. Connor Delepine singled to right in the sixth for an insurance run.

Dermody got the hard-luck loss, throwing five innings, allowing two earned runs on only four hits and striking out five. Junior Tim Fangman pitched the final three innings, yielding only three hits.

Defensively, senior Tyson Blaser kept runners out of scoring position, throwing out all three runners attempting to steal second base today.

Iowa (0-3) returns to action next weekend when it plays Saint Louis in Lawrence, Kan. Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Hoglund Ballpark.
