INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The NCAA will announce the 330 student-athletes set to participate in the 2011 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships via a Web stream selection show on NCAA.com on Wednesday at 5 p.m. (CT).
Shane Sparks will serve as the host as he unveils each of the 10 brackets in the championship field. Complete printable brackets will be available on NCAA.com at 5:30 pm. (CT) following the show.
Iowa enters the 2011 NCAA Championships, which will be held March 17-19 at Wells Fargo Arena in Philadelphia, Pa., as the three-time defending team champion and with a total of 23 NCAA team titles in its trophy case. Hawkeye seniors Luke Lofthouse (197) and Aaron Janssen (165), juniors Montell Marion (141) and Blake Rasing (Hwt.), sophomores Matt McDonough (125) and Grant Gambrall (184) and redshirt freshmen Tony Ramos (133), Derek St. John (157) and Ethen Lofthouse (174), automatically qualified for the national meet at the 2011 Big Ten Championships last weekend. McDonough is the defending NCAA champion at 125 pounds, while Marion earned All-America honors for placing second last year. Iowa’s other seven qualifiers will be making their first appearance at the NCAA tournament.
Iowa will find out Wednesday night if sophomore Mark Ballweg (149) earned one of the tournament’s 48 at-large bids.
Following the selection announcement fans are encouraged to tune into Takedown Wrestling’s annual NCAA Division I Championships Preview Show from 7 – 10 p.m. (CT). Host Scott Casber will be joined in studio by co-hosts Steve Foster, Jeff Murphy, Ryan Freeman and Geoff Murtha, as they breakdown the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships bracket by bracket. The three-hour broadcast will feature several distinguished guests, including NCAA Division I Wrestling committee chair, Derek Van Der Merwe, and NCAA champion and National Wrestling Hall of Famer, Wade Schalles.
