IOWA CITY, Iowa – – University of Iowa Head Men’s Basketball Coach Fran McCaffery announced today that junior college All-American Anthony Hubbard has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend the University of Iowa.
Hubbard is a 6-5, 220-pound guard from Frederick, Md. He averaged 21 points, 11 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game last season for Frederick Community College (Md.). He shot nearly 65% from the field. Hubbard will join the Hawkeyes as a junior after playing his freshman season at Odessa Junior College (Texas).
“We are very excited to have Anthony become a Hawkeye,” said McCaffery. “His versatility and skill set will really benefit our program. He can pretty much play any position on the floor. Anthony’s athletic; he can score, and is perfectly suited for our style of play. He’s proven that he has the character necessary to make a great impact with us. We are looking forward to Anthony joining our program.”
The team captain was a first team all-Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference (MDJUCO) and National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) all-Region XX honoree. He was also tabbed to the first team all-MDJUCO all-tournament and Region XX all-tournament squads. Hubbard was named MVP of the County College of Morris Thanksgiving Tournament and he picked up all-tournament accolades at the Roy Rogers Holiday Classic and Goodwill Tip-off Tournament.
“Anthony’s played on good teams and played for good coaches. His maturity level will help our team immensely. Slowly but surely we are putting the pieces together that are going to make us highly competitive in the Big Ten,” added McCaffery.
Hubbard will join already signed Hawkeye recruits Josh Oglesby of Cedar Rapids Washington High School and Aaron White of Strongsville (Ohio) High School on the 2011-12 Iowa roster.
