Andrew Host Flashing the Leather for Quincy Gems

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa outfielder Andrew Host has been having a fantastic summer for the Quincy Gems. Host, who is in his second summer season with the Gems, was rewarded for his strong play in being named to the Prospect League All-Star Game early this month.

Blake Toppmeyer of the Quincy Herald-Whig recently wrote an acrticle about Host’s stellar defensive ability and plays that has made him one of the team’s best players.

Springfield Sliders outfielder Brad McKewon lifted the fly ball to straightaway right field, where Quincy Gems outfielder Andrew Host was settling underneath the ball and ready to make the catch.

It looked like the fly ball might be deep enough to serve as a sacrifice fly and bring home Joe Pudlo from third base.

Pudlo, however, never made a strong move toward the plate after Host made the catch in this July 2 game. It’s a good thing too. Host’s throw to home plate was a bullet and would have cut down Pudlo easily.

In this instance, Host’s reputation as a strong-armed outfielder had proceeded him.
