IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa has released its 2011-12 wrestling schedule. The schedule includes seven home dates, a return trip to the Cliff Keen National Duals — which Iowa has won a total of six times — and a lineup of national contenders.
Seven of Iowa’s 14 dual opponents finished in the top 20 at the 2011 NCAA Championships. They include Penn State (1), Oklahoma State (4), Minnesota (7), Wisconsin (10), Nebraska (12), Northwestern (13) and Iowa State (20).
The Hawkeyes open the season Nov. 19 with a trip to St. Charles, Mo., for the Lindenwood University Open. The Hawkeyes then return to Carver-Hawkeye Arena Nov. 25 to host the Iowa City Duals in their home opener. Iowa will look to extend its school-record unbeaten streak when Baker University, Cornell College and Iowa Central visit Iowa City for the dual tournament. The Hawkeyes are unbeaten in their last 77 dual matches.
In addition to the Iowa City Duals, Iowa’s home schedule includes duals against Illinois (Dec. 3), Northern Iowa (Dec. 8), Oklahoma State (Jan. 8), Northwestern (Jan. 15), Minnesota (Jan. 29) and Wisconsin (Feb. 5).
The Hawkeyes first road dual is Dec. 4 at Iowa State. Iowa has won the last seven meetings and owns a 23-11-1 mark in Ames, Iowa. The Hawkeyes will also have road duals at Indiana (Jan. 6), Nebraska (Jan. 13), Penn State (Jan. 20) and Ohio State (Jan. 22).
Matt McDonough will defend his Big Ten title March 3-4 in West Lafayette, Ind. |
Iowa’s trip to Nebraska will mark the 39th meeting between the two schools, but the first as conference rivals. The Hawkeyes own a 26-10-2 advantage in the series, including a 33-3 victory when the teams last met at the 2010 National Duals.
The Hawkeyes return to Ames, Iowa, Feb. 12 to compete in Region 1 of the Cliff Keen Division I National Duals. Iowa will battle Iowa State (host), Northern Iowa, Oregon State, Virginia Tech and Wisconsin at Hilton Coliseum for the opportunity to advance to the National Dual Meet Championships, to be held Feb. 19 on the campus of one of four competing teams.
Iowa travels to the Evanston, Ill., for the 49th annual Midlands Championships Dec. 29-30.
The Hawkeyes will be after their 35th Big Ten team title Mar. 3-4 in West Lafayette, Ind., and a 24th NCAA team title Mar. 15-17 at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis.
