PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The University of Iowa field hockey team shutout Brown University Saturday, 7-0. The 15th-ranked Hawkeyes move to 5-1 with the victory. The match was held at the Friar Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex on the campus of Providence.

Kim Scraper led Iowa with four goals in the contest, marking the first time a Hawkeye has recorded four scores in a game since Pattie Gillern scored five in a win over Missouri State on Sept. 28, 2003. The sophomore leads the Big Ten with 12 goals this season.

“We started out a bit slow in the first half,” said head coach Tracey Griesbaum. “The second half was much better overall.”

The Hawkeyes struck first at the 9:05 mark as Scraper scored to give Iowa a 1-0 lead. In the 17th minute, Scraper scored off a rebound to push the Hawkeye lead to 2-0.

At the 19:10 mark, Niki Schultheis scored off a corner to make the score 3-0. Marike Stribos was credited with the assist. Iowa led at the half, 3-0.

Sarah Drake tallied a goal at the 42:28 mark to push the lead to 4-0. Moments later, Scraper tallied her third score of the contest to give Iowa a 5-0 advantage. Scraper notched her fourth goal of the game at the 56:41 mark, as she chipped it over the goalkeeper to make the score 6-0.

Becca Spengler added the final Hawkeye goal on a penalty corner in the 60th minute to make the final score 7-0. Stribos was credited with the assist.

Iowa goalkeepers Kathleen McGraw and Kelsey Boyce helped secure the Hawkeyes’ second shutout of the season. The Black and Gold dominated possession and maintained pressure on Brown (1-3) throughout the contest. Iowa recorded 37 shots and nine penalty corners, while the Bears tallied two and one, respectively.

Iowa, who has outscored its last four opponents 21-4, returns to action next weekend in Iowa City. The Hawkeyes host Central Michigan Saturday and Missouri State Sunday. Both matches are at Grant Field and both are scheduled to start at 1 p.m. Admission is free.
