IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa field hockey team defeated No. 18 Indiana, 4-2, Saturday at Grant Field. Iowa, ranked 13th nationally, is 11-3 overall and 3-2 in Big Ten play.

“I am really proud of this entire group and the leadership that is stepping up,” said head coach Tracey Griesbaum. “We were uptight at the beginning and gave up a soft goal, but we rebounded and responded really well. It says a lot. That is hard to do.”

The visitors struck first. Indiana took a 1-0 lead in the second minute of play with a goal off a corner.

Iowa’s Sarah Drake scored a goal off a pass from Marike Stribos to tie the score at 1-1 at the 16:40 mark.

Jessica Barnett gave the Hawkeyes the lead in the 30th minute. She took the pass on a corner, dribbled around the defense, and slammed a goal between the legs of the Indiana goalkeeper to make the score 2-1 at halftime.

At the 45:32 mark, Brenna Moeljadi tallied her second goal of the contest for the Hoosiers to tie the score at 2-2.

Moments later, Iowa regained the lead. Drake chipped in a goal at the 48:46 mark to make the score 3-2 in favor of the Black and Gold.

Kelsey Mitchell secured the win for the Hawkeyes in the 67th minute with an insurance goal over the Hoosier goalkeeper, making the final score 4-2.

The UI honored senior Becca Spengler before the game for “Senior Day.”

“This team has done a lot of really neat things,” said Spengler. “We wanted to stay focused on getting the win today. It was really important. It is huge. It is really exciting.”

Iowa (11-3, 3-2) continues action next weekend when it travels to Evanston, Ill., for two matches. The Hawkeyes will play at Northwestern Oct. 22 and will then face Pacific in Evanston on Oct. 23. The match against the Wildcats will be Iowa’s final Big Ten conference match during the regular season.
