Hawkeyes Go 5-for-5 in Semis

Midlands Session III

EVANSTON, Ill. – The University of Iowa wrestling team went five-for-five in semifinal matches and sits in first place at the 49th Annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships following Friday’s afternoon session. Iowa leads the team race with 145 points. Tournament host Northwestern is in second with 97.5 points. Oklahoma (87.5), Virginia Tech (72.5) and Edinboro (68.5) round out the top five.

Matt McDonough (125), Tony Ramos (133), Montell Marion (141), Ethen Lofthouse (174) and Bobby Telford (Hwt.) earned semifinal victories to advance to tonight’s finals. McDonough, the tournament’s No. 2 seed, will try for his second career Midlands title against Virginia Tech’s eighth-seeded Jarrod Garnett. McDonough earned a finals’ berth with a 7-1 victory over Oklahoma’s third-seeded Jarrod Patterson.

Ramos and Marion, both top seeds at their respective weights, will each aim for their first Midlands championship following semifinal decisions. Ramos topped fourth-seeded B.J. Futrell (Illinois), 6-2, while Marion held on for a 3-2 win over Princeton’s 12th-seeded Adam Krop.

Lofthouse advanced to his first Midlands finals with an 8-6 decision over Illinois’ third-seeded Jordan Blanton. Telford advanced to his first Midlands finals with a 4-2 decision over the No. 10 seed Mike McMullan. Telford scored an escape in the third frame and scored takedown in the overtime period to finish Iowa’s clean sweep through the semifinals.

Tyler Clark (133) picked up a pair of wins in the wrestlebacks and will compete for third place in tonight’s final session. Michael Kelly (149) advanced past the consolation quarterfinals via a medical forfeit before losing major decision in the semifinals. He will wrestle for fifth place tonight.

Nick Moore (157), Mike Evans (165), Vinnie Wagner (165) and Grant Gambrall (197) dropped decisions in the consolation quarterfinals but rebounded to win their final seventh place matches. Iowa wrestlers combined for an 18-7 record in the third session.

The final round of the Midlands Championships begins tonight at 7 p.m. inside Welsh-Ryan Arena on the campus of Northwestern University.
