Meet the Hawkeyes: Ellen Silver

IOWA CITY, Iowa – – University of Iowa head coach Katie Dougherty added four freshmen to her roster for the 2011-12 season. The additions included Grand Rapids, Mich., native Ellen Silver, who opened her college career by winning the McNabb Singles Flight of the Gopher Invitational. The former five-star recruit recently sat down with hawkeyesports.com to talk about life as a Hawkeye.

Why did you choose the University of Iowa?
“The coaches made a huge impact on me and the team is all really close. We’re like a family.”

What impresses you about the coaching staff?
“They take a lot of time with each and every one of us and really tell us what we need to work on. They’ve just been great.”

What are your expectations for the team this year?
“Our team goal is to make it to the NCAA Tournament.”

What has been the best part about being a student-athlete at Iowa so far?
“Being part of the tennis team.”

What will you remember most about of your first fall as a Hawkeye?
“The experience of playing a lot of the other teams, the top teams, and being a part of the Iowa tennis team.”

During the fall season, what did you do to keep yourself entertained on road trips?
“We like to sing. Car rides are a great time.”

If you could play a tennis match against anyone, who would it be? Why?
“Roger Federer because I personally think he’s the best tennis player ever.”

What is your best tennis memory ever?
“I got to hit with Pete Sampras.”

What person has been most influential on your tennis game?
“My coach from home, Brian Hutch.”

What do you like to do in your free time away from the tennis court?
“Hang out with friends and watch movies.”
