Jan. 10, 2012

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa 133-pound wrestler Tony Ramos has been named Big Ten Co-Wrestler of the Week. The weekly honor is the second of Ramos’ career.

Ramos, a sophomore from Carol Stream, Ill., earned a second-period pin at Indiana on Friday and topped defending NCAA champion and top-ranked Jordan Oliver on Saturday. His 4-3 overtime victory over Oliver ran Ramos’ career dual record to 20-0, including a perfect 12-0 mark inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Ramos, currently ranked No. 1 in the country by Amateur Wrestling News, owns a 17-1 record with four major decisions, four pins and five technical falls.

Ramos shared the weekly award with Illinois 149-pound senior Eric Terrazas, marking the second time this season he has shared the weekly conference honor. He last earned the award Dec. 6, 2011, following a pair of bonus point victories over Illinois’ B.J. Futrell and Iowa State’s Shayden Terukina.

Ramos and the Hawkeyes return to the mat Friday at Nebraska. The Huskers host the Hawkeyes at 7 p.m. inside the NU Coliseum. Iowa then returns to Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Sunday to host Northwestern at 1 p.m. on Mediacom Mat.
