Kuebel Named Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week

Feb. 27, 2012

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa pitcher Sasha Kuebel has been named Big Ten co-Freshman of the Week, the conference announced Monday. Kuebel, a left-handed starter, garners his first career weekly honor.

“He is very deserving,” said head coach Jack Dahm. “He pitched like a veteran against a good ACC team (Virginia Tech). Sasha has pitched well to start the season and we look forward to his continued improvement.”

Kuebel (6-1, 200) started and took a no-decision despite a stellar outing Sunday against Virginia Tech in the Caravelle Resort Baseball at the Beach Tournament. In his second career start, the rookie pitched seven and a third, allowing one run on three hits. He struck out three Hokies.

The St. Louis, Mo., native has made two starts this season. He has scattered seven hits and allowed three runs in 11 and two-thirds innings pitched. Kuebel ranks 13th among Big Ten starters with an ERA of 2.31.

Iowa (1-5) returns to action in Clarksville, Tenn., on Friday in the Austin Peay/River View Inn Classic. The Hawkeyes open against Akron. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. (CT).
