IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa baseball team will host Nebraska-Omaha in a mid-week contest Wednesday night at 6:05 p.m. The Hawkeyes will be looking to capture win No. 200 at Iowa for head coach Jack Dahm. Admission is $3 for adults, and free for students.
The Hawkeyes (9-11, 2-1) took two of three from Northwestern over the weekend at Duane Banks Field in their Big Ten opening series. It marked the first time Iowa won a conference opening series since 1998 when it took three-of-four from Michigan State. The Black and Gold are in a tie for first place after the opening conference weekend.
The Hawkeyes have won six of their last nine contests after taking the opening Big Ten series. Iowa has won three of its first four home games after playing its first 16 games of the season on the road.
The Hawkeyes defeated Northwestern Friday in their Big Ten opener at Duane Banks Field, 3-2. Iowa won on a walk-off single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth by freshman Jake Yacinich. Senior Jarred Hippen tossed his ninth career complete game in the victory. The senior ace tossed the complete game, his fifth complete game against Big Ten competition the last two seasons, allowing two runs while scattering nine hits. He struck out six Wildcats.
After dropping the middle game Saturday (3-0), Iowa defeated Northwestern Sunday in the rubber game, 3-1. Sasha Kuebel made his first career Big Ten start and earned his second win of the season to move to 2-0. The freshman tossed seven complete innings, allowing one unearned run while scattering two hits. He struck out one Wildcat and allowed only one walk.
Nebraska-Omaha is coached by Bob Herold. Herold is in his 13th season as the head coach of the program. The Mavericks are 7-16 this season and 3-12 away from home. Iowa is 4-0 all-time against UNO. Herold was an assistant coach at Creighton from 1985-87, while Dahm was a student-athlete for the Bluejays from 1986-89.
UNO and Iowa each played in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. The Mavericks defeated Chicago State (8-4), Long Island (3-2, 19 innings), Bucknell (13-1) and Bradley (4-3), while falling to Army (8-3), Jacksonville State (5-2) and Northwestern (3-1).
Iowa continues Big Ten action when it travels to Indiana for a three-game set beginning Friday at 2:05 p.m. (CT). The Hawkeyes and Hoosiers will also play Saturday and Sunday at 12:05 p.m. (CT) each day.
