IOWA CITY, Iowa — Penn State’s Steven Hill outdueled Iowa’s Matt Dermody Saturday afternoon in a 2-0 Nittany Lion victory over the Iowa baseball team at Duane Banks Field. Hill retired just two batters over the minimum in recording the first Penn State baseball no-hitter since 1995.
Penn State, who has won 11 of its last 13 games, improves to 18-20 overall and 6-5 in Big Ten play while Iowa falls to 15-19 overall and 4-7 in conference action.
“Steven Hill threw a very good game,” said Iowa head coach Jack Dahm. “(Hill) did a good job of mixing speeds and going inside and out. We hit some hard balls, but right at people. I feel bad for Matt because he also threw an outstanding game. We need to do a better job competing and with our offensive approach. I’m disappointed we weren’t able to get Matt any runs.”
Iowa’s first batter, Mike McQuillan, led the game off with a walk but ultimately was stranded at third base in the top of the first inning. McQuillan was the Hawkeyes’ only other base runner the remainder of the game; he also reached in the sixth after being hit by a pitch.
After a scoreless four innings, Penn State tallied the only runs of the contest in the top of the fifth. With one out and a runner on first base, JC Coban launched a home run off the scoreboard in left field to give the visitors a 2-0 advantage.
Dermody got the hard-luck loss, throwing his second complete game of his career, but the two-run homer was the difference. Dermody scattered six hits, while striking out four in the nine innings of work.
Hill struck out three batters en route to his fourth victory of the season.
The game lasted only 1:48, which is the quickest Hawkeye game of the year.
Iowa and Penn State will play the final game of the weekend series tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 12:05 p.m. at Duane Banks Field. Admission is $3 for adults and free for students.
