IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa baseball team hosts Milwaukee in a mid-week contest Tuesday night. The Hawkeyes face the Panthers at 6:05 p.m. at Duane Banks Field. Admission is $3 for adults, and free for students. The game, which is Iowa’s final mid-week contest at home this season, marks the first of four-straight home games for the Hawkeyes.
Iowa (17-22, 6-9) won 1-of-3 games at Minnesota over the weekend. After losing the first two games of the weekend series by one run, Iowa posted a thrilling 5-4 win in 12 innings Sunday in the Metrodome to avoid the series sweep. Phil Keppler delivered the game-winner with a one-out RBI single to right center scoring Mike McQuillan from second base in the top of the 12th.
McQuillan finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. His first base hit was the 227th of his career, which moved him past Brad Carlson (1999-02) for third on Iowa’s career hits list.
Freshman Taylor Kaufman earned his second victory of the year, pitching a season-long four and two-thirds. His previous long was three and two-thirds against Army on March 16. Fellow freshman Nick Hibbing entered in the 12th and secured his second save of the campaign retiring the final two Gophers.
Milwaukee, led by head coach Scott Doffek, is 17-23. Doffek is in his sixth season as head coach after spending the previous 12 as assistant head coach. The Panthers are 7-16 on the road this season. Milwaukee was swept over the weekend at home by Valparaiso after winning four-straight games.
Tuesday’s game marks the 15th meeting between the two programs. Milwaukee leads the all-time series, 8-6, after winning in Iowa City last year, 4-3.
Iowa returns to Big Ten action when it hosts Michigan for a three-game set at Duane Banks Field this weekend. The Hawkeyes and Wolverines will open the series at 6:05 p.m. on Friday. Iowa and Michigan will also play at 1:05 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. All three games can be seen on BTN.com.
