Michigan State Takes Series Finale Against Iowa

EAST LANSING, Mich. — The University of Iowa baseball team lost 7-3 to Michigan State Sunday afternoon at McLane Stadium. Sunday was the rubber match of the weekend series after the Spartans won Friday (6-0) while Iowa won yesterday (2-1).

Michigan State (33-17, 12-9) scored the first seven runs of the contest off Hawkeye starter Jarred Hippen. The Spartans tallied one run in the second, followed by three in the fifth, one in the sixth and two in the seventh.

Hippen got the loss for the visitors, allowing seven runs (five earned) in six and a third innings of work. Nick Hibbing, Andrew Hedrick and Andrew Hanse combined to pitch a scoreless inning and two thirds out of the bullpen for Iowa.

Iowa (20-26, 8-13) scored its three runs in the top of the eighth inning. Eric Toole led the frame with a single and later scored on a throwing error by Michigan State’s left fielder after a Jake Mangler double. The inning also featured RBI singles by freshman Jake Yacinich and senior Chett Zeise. The Hawkeyes recorded four of their six hits in the eighth.

Spartan sophomore David Garner earned his fourth victory of the season, pitching seven innings of scoreless baseball. Trey Popp and Bryce Jenney each pitched an inning out of the Michigan State bullpen.

The Spartan offense had nine hits, four of which went for extra bases, including two home runs.

The Hawkeyes return to action Tuesday when they conclude nonconference play at Creighton. First pitch is scheduled for noon from TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Neb.
