Hawkeyes Fall to No. 13 Purdue in Series Opener

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa baseball team dropped an 11-8 decision to 13th-ranked Purdue Thursday night. The two conference foes combined for 19 runs and 29 hits. The game is the first in a three-game set at Duane Banks Field.

Three Hawkeyes, freshman Jake Mangler, freshman Eric Toole, and senior Mike McQuillan, recorded multiple-hit games to lead the Iowa offense. Mangler finished 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI, securing his second three-hit game. Toole went 2-for-5 with a run scored in the lead-off spot. McQuillan finished 2-for-3 with two walks, two RBI and a run scored. McQuillan has 236 career hits and is one away from tying Craig Conti for second-most all-time in program history. Senior Phil Keppler extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a double in the fifth inning.

“It’s tough to overcome those two big innings early,” said head coach Jack Dahm. “The park played really small today. The ball was jumping. Our guys battled back and the pitchers settled in. Defensively, I thought we played well.”

Purdue (41-10, 17-5) struck first in the top of the first, scoring four runs to grab a 4-0 lead. The Boilermakers added a three-run home run in the top of the second to extend their lead to 7-0.

Iowa (21-27, 8-14) cut the lead to 7-1 in the bottom of the second. Senior Chett Zeise tripled to center to open the frame. Freshman Anthony Torres drove home Zeise with a sacrifice fly to left.

The visitors made the score 8-1 with a solo home run in the top of the third.

The Hawkeyes cut the lead to 8-3 with a two-RBI triple by freshman Nick Day in the bottom of the fourth.

Purdue answered with a solo home run in the top of the fifth to make the score 9-3.

A two-run double to right center in the bottom of the fifth by McQuillan cut the Purdue lead to 9-5. Iowa scored two runs for the third-straight inning in the bottom of the sixth. An RBI groundout by Day and a RBI single by McQuillan cut the Purdue lead to 9-7.

The Boilermakers added single runs in the top of the seventh and the top of the eighth to extend the lead to 11-7.

Iowa added a run in the bottom of the ninth an RBI groundout by Keppler, making the final score, 11-8.

Starter Matt Dermody took the loss. The junior allowed nine runs on 11 hits in five innings. He struck out five Boilermakers. Andrew Hanse, Tim Fangman, Taylor Kaufman, and Nick Hibbing saw action out of the Iowa bullpen.

Joe Haase earned his conference-leading ninth win of the season for Purdue (9-1). He pitched five and a third innings, allowing six runs (five earned) on nine hits. The Boilermakers clinched the Big Ten regular season title outright with the victory. Purdue has won the opener in nine-straight conference series.

Iowa and Purdue continue their three-game set Friday at 6:35 p.m. at Duane Banks Field. The contest will be televised live by BTN.
