Iowa goalkeeper Kathleen McGraw, a native of Atherton, Calif., recently sat down with hawkeyesports.com.
What was it like to be a member of the 2011 NCAA Tournament team?
“Being selected to the tournament was one of the most exciting points in my career thus far. However, this year’s tournament was just the tip of the iceberg. We got a taste, and this past season’s NCAA Tournament taught us a lot, but going forward the first round will not be enough to satisfy our ultimate goals.”
How rewarding was the experience, after the work put in during the offseason?
“It was satisfying to have something tangible to show for the countless hours of preparation leading up to and throughout our competition season. The turnaround in our record, coupled with an NCAA Tournament appearance, is evidence that our work did pay off. This knowledge serves as motivation for our team throughout the 2012 season.
If you were cast on a reality TV show, which one would you prefer to be on and why?
“Chopped on the Food Network. I would love to be able to cook like that in a high-pressure situation.”
Other than Grant Field, what is your favorite place on campus?
“The Studio Arts Building. Every time you walk in the doors there is something new going on whether it be a new exhibit, guest lecture, or performance art piece.”
Do you have any hobbies?
“If I am not playing hockey, studying, or sleeping, I am usually drawing or painting.”
What is your favorite food/meal?
“Thai food, but I will eat just about anything that has soy sauce as a main ingredient.”
Who is your favorite professional athlete?
“Brian Wilson – closer for the San Francisco Giants.”
How is your academic career path coming along?
“At this point, I am really getting into the essential concepts of economic and financial analysis for my major. It is exciting to see how current events are directly correlated with short term financial advances and setbacks.”
Who is the most influential person in your life?
“My three sisters are the most influential people in my life. They are all strong women who relentlessly pursue their personal goals while maintaining a solid ethical and moral standing.”
What is your favorite restaurant in the Iowa City area?
“The Motley Cow. I like how they manipulate the menu for each of the seasons to provide locally grown ingredients in their dishes year round.”
What was the key factor in your recruitment that led you to Iowa City and the Hawkeye field hockey program?
“The state of the art facilities coupled with a highly competitive coaching staff.
