IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa women’s soccer team hosted its annual Black and Gold Scrimmage game Friday evening at the Iowa Soccer Complex. Head coach Ron Rainey saw a strong defensive effort from both squads as the match ended in a 0-0 tie.
“I was really pleased with how things went,” said Rainey, who is entering his seventh season as head coach. “Our possession was solid, and we saw a lot of good things and also the things we need to work on. Overall, this was a great evening and a beautiful night at the complex.”
Iowa’s trio of goalkeepers combined to see eight shots without letting the ball find net. Sophomore returning letterwinner Kiley Beck started for the White team and freshman Meg Goodson started for the Gold team. Beck and Goodson split time evenly with freshman Hannah Clark, as the three each looked solid between the posts.
“It was great to be able to get under the lights here and get a feel for where we are at,” said Beck, who saw action in two matches last season. “It’s good to be able to get some touches out here rather than in a practice scrimmage, because things were a little more intense and game-like.”
Sophomore Cloe Lacasse, Iowa’s offensive most valuable player last season, fired a hard hit shot on goal from ten yards out in the 17th minute, but Clark notched the save. Lacasse, senior Dana Dalrymple and junior Ashley Catrell provided a strong attacking presence up front for the White team. The three combined to tally six shots, all of them on goal.
“It was nice to go through the motions of what it’s like to have a real game,” said Dalrymple, who scored five goals last season. “As a team, we can see where everybody is at, get some quality practice in and have fun playing together. Overall, I thought it went really well.”
While the White team out-shot the Gold team, the Gold would earn two corners and a threatening free kick in the second half. Senior Gabrielle Ainsworth, who was celebrating her 22nd birthday, sent a free kick just barely over the crossbar from outside the box with five minutes left in the match.
Each player on the roster saw nearly the same playing time, as Rainey got a chance to see where his team stands just one week before their first game. The Hawkeyes will begin the season on Friday, Aug. 17, hosting Eastern Illinois. The match will begin at 7 p.m. at the Iowa Soccer Complex.
