BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — University of Iowa sophomore Katie Zordani brought home the hardware today at the doubles championship of the 2012 ITA National Collegiate Circuit Championship. Zordani teamed with Nebraska’s Mary Weatherholt, the reigning Big Ten women’s tennis athlete of the year, to win the title on the campus of Indiana University.
Zordani and Weatherholt cruised to the title by outscoring their opponents 32-11. The duo defeated Illinois’ doubles team, 8-3, in the opening round before recording 8-2 decisions in the quarter and semifinals. They then doubled up Yale’s tandem of Elizabeth Epstein and Annie Sullivan in the finals, 8-4.
Zordani owned a record of 14-20 while competing at the 3-6 spots in the lineup as a freshman in 2012. She was honored with the Grinder Award at the team’s annual awards banquet for her consistent contributions to the team through hard work dedication.
