This Week
The University of Iowa women’s soccer team will close out nonconference play against Saint Louis on Wednesday before opening Big Ten action at Illinois on Sunday.
The Hawkeyes will meet the Billikens at Hermann Stadium in Saint Louis, Mo., at 5 p.m. (CT). Live stats will be avaliable, and the contest will be streamed live with a subscription. Both can be found on Iowa’s schedule page.
Iowa faces the Fighting Illini at the Illinois Soccer and Track Stadium at 2 p.m. (CT). The match will be televised live on BTN.
Scouting The Opponents
Saint Louis is 1-3-2 this season, and is coming off a 2-1 setback to Florida Gulf Coast. The Billiken’s lone victory came in a 2-0 win against Evansville. Saint Louis’ offensive attack is paced by Jenny Hummert and Jamei Borges. Each have two goals this season. Katie Walsh has played every minute for Saint Louis in goal this season with a .767 save percentage.
The Fighting Illini are 3-3-1. Their three losses this season have come against ranked opponents. Nicole Breece leads Illinois with three points off a goal and an assist, while six other players each have two points. Steph Panozzo has played every minute in goal with a 0.83 goals against average.
Hawkeyes Win Black Knight Classic
Iowa went 2-0-0 in West Point, N.Y., last weekend to become the Black Knight Classic champions. The Hawkeyes defeated Army (2-1) and LIU Brooklyn (4-0) as it was the first time in three years Army was surplanted as tournament champion.
The Hawkeyes opened with a thrilling contest against the Black Knights, scoring a game-winning goal in the 66th minute to earn a 2-1 victory. Senior Dana Dalrymple scored the final goal for the Hawkeyes. Sophomore Cloe Lacasse opened the scoring with a goal in the 23rd minute. Army scored in the 57th minute. Freshman Hannah Clark improved her record to 5-0-0 at goal this season, holding Army without a goal while she was in the contest. Dalrymple led Iowa with three points and three shots.
Iowa closed out the tournament strong, flexing its muscles in a 4-0 victory over LIU Brooklyn. The Hawkeyes scored three first half goals against the Blackbirds to take command. Dalrymple (18′), and Lacasse (19′)(39′) found net in the first half, while sophomore Katie Nasenbenny (64′) closed out the scoring in the second half. Freshman Meg Goodson improved her record to 3-0-0 at goalkeeper. Each of Iowa’s goals came off assists. Eight players scored points in the match, led by Lacasse (4) and Nasenbenny (3).
4 Hawkeyes Named to All-Tournament Team
Senior Dana Dalrymple and sophomores Melanie Pickert, Katie Brown and Cloe Lacasse were named to the Black Knight Classic All-Tournament team. Lacasse was named tournament MVP.
Hawkeyes On Top of Big Ten Standings
Iowa is currently in sole possession of the top spot in Big Ten standings as the only team in the conference with an unblemished record.
The Hawkeyes have been on top of the standings five consecutive weeks. It is the second year in a row Iowa has climbed to No. 1 in the Big Ten standings at some point in the season.
The Hawkeyes rank first in seven major statistical categories. Iowa ranks first in shots (155), points (73), goals (27), goals per game (3.38), goals allowed (3), goals against average (0.38), shutouts (5) and victory margin (+3.0)
Rainey Gets Win #150
Head coach Ron Rainey earned his 150th career victory and his 60th victory at Iowa in the victory over Army. Rainey currently has a 151-119-34 overall record, and a 61-54-13 mark at Iowa.
Iowa Improves Ranking
The Hawkeyes jumped four spots in the TopDrawerSoccer.com Tournament 64 National Ranking for the second straight week. Iowa is ranked No. 33 in this week’s poll, which is third highest in the Big Ten. Iowa also jumped one spot in the NSCAA/Continental Tire ranking, taking the No. 5 spot in the Great Lakes poll.
Nonconference Success
Iowa has won 17 consecutive nonconference matches, outscoring its opponents 68-8 in that stretch. The Hawkeyes have played 18 consecutive nonconference matches without a loss. Iowa’s last loss in nonconference play came on Sept. 19, 2010, at Nebraska (3-1).
Hawkeyes Start Fast Iowa has taken a lead into halftime in every match this season, and has yet to trail in a game. The Hawkeyes have outscored their opponents 16-0 in the first half.
Hawkeyes Dominating Stats
Iowa has looked just as impressive in the stat book as it has on the field this season. The Hawkeyes have outscored their opponents 27-3 this season, and have outshot them 155-80. Iowa holds a 76-33 advatage in shots on goal. Iowa is averaging 3.5 goals per game and has a .496 shot on goal percentage. The Hawkeyes are outscoring their opponents on average by three goals per match.
Lacasse On Career Goal List
Sophomore Cloe Lacasse ranks fourth on Iowa’s all-time career goal list after her 19th and 39th minute goals against LIU Brooklyn.
Lacasse has 10 goals this season, and 22 in her career. She has scored 22 goals in 28 career games played. Sarah Lynch is Iowa’s all-time goals leader with 46. Lacasse has 24 points this season, and is also leading the team with four assists. Lacasse ranks sixth in career points with 54. Lynch is also Iowa’s points leader with 112. Lacasse ranks first in the Big Ten in shots (36), and is second in points (24), points per game (3.00), goals (10) and goals per game (1.25)
GKs Rank No. 1 and 2 in Big Ten
Freshmen goalkeepers Hannah Clark and Meg Goodson rank first and second in the league in save percentage. Clark has a .900 save percentage, while Goodson is at .889.
Clark holds a 5-0-0 record with nine saves through 350 minutes played. The Fort Collins, Colo., native also has a .26 goals against average, which ranks first in the Big Ten.
Goodson holds a 3-0-0 record with 16 saves through 270 minutes. The Van Meter, Iowa, native has a 0.67 goals against average, which ranks fifth in the Big Ten.
Sophomore Kiley Beck also has played 97 minutes without allowing a goal. Beck has registered four saves.
In-State Dominance
The Hawkeyes are the soccer state champions for the fifth-straight season, beating both in-state rivals this year. Iowa defeated Northern Iowa (3-0) and Iowa State (3-1).
The Hawkeyes are unbeaten in their last 15 in-state regular season matches. In that stretch, Iowa has a 6-0-1 advantage over Iowa State, 6-0-0 advantage over Northern Iowa and a 2-0-0 advantage over Drake. Iowa has outscored its in-state foes 39-4 in that stretch.
Team Captains
The Hawkeyes have three team captains this season. Senior Dana Dalrymple and juniors Alex Melin and Kat Lewis were voted as captains by their teammates.
Hawkeyes on tv
Iowa will appear live on Big Ten Network at least twice this season. Iowa’s Big Ten opener against Illinois on Sept. 16 will be televised live. The match begins at 2 p.m. in Champaign, Ill. The Hawkeyes will appear live on BTN on Sept. 30 when they travel to Michigan State. The match will begin at 1 p.m. in East Lansing, Mich.
Head Coach Ron Rainey
Iowa head coach Ron Rainey enters his seventh season at the helm of the program as the winningest coach in program history. Rainey has 61 victories with the Hawkeyes, and sports a 151-119-34 overall coaching record.
Rainey guided Iowa to its most successful season in program history last season, as Iowa went 13-4-3 and had its highest winning percentage ever. Rainey has guided the Hawkeyes to three Big Ten Tournaments, and has helped five Hawkeyes earn All-Big Ten honors.
