EAST LANSING, Mich. — Senior Jessica Barnett’s team-leading fifth goal of the season lifted the 13th-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team to a 1-0 victory over No. 15 Michigan State on Friday afternoon at Ralph Young Field. It was Iowa’s fourth-straight win.

“It was a great result for us, coming off the win last weekend and starting conference play,” said UI head coach Tracey Griesbaum. “It was an all-out team effort, and we got the job done.”

After heading into the half scoreless, the Hawkeyes found the back of the cage in the 37th minute. Barnett scored on a penalty corner when her quick shot deflected into the net past MSU goalkeeper Molly Cassidy. Junior Marike Stribos was credited with the assist on the goal.

“It was a beautiful goal from Marike to JB,” said Griesbaum.

The Hawkeyes dominated the action throughout the contest, holding an 18-7 advantage in shots and a 9-2 edge in penalty corners. Iowa forced Cassidy into making eight saves.

Senior goalkeeper Kathleen McGraw registered her Big Ten-leading fourth shutout of the season for the Hawkeyes. McGraw made a pair of saves in improving to 6-2 on the year.

Iowa (6-2, 1-0) returns to action Sunday at Central Michigan. Game time is set for 11 a.m. in Mt. Pleasant, Mich.
