UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The 11th-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team suffered its first conference loss of the season Sunday, falling 5-1 to No. 7 Penn State (12-3) at the Penn State Field Hockey Complex. The Hawkeyes (10-4), who entered the game as the only Big Ten team without a conference loss, are now tied atop the league standings with Penn State and Northwestern at 3-1.

The game featured the Big Ten’s best offense and defense, as Penn State entered the contest pacing the conference in goals scored (62), while Iowa was first in goals allowed (17). Offense won, as Penn State outshot Iowa, 25-8, and held a 12-0 advantage in penalty corners. The Nittany Lions were led by All-American Kelsey Amy, who tallied three goals and an assist.

“We did not play well in any facet of our game,” said UI head coach Tracey Griesbaum. “We were on our heels within the first five minutes of the game and never recovered.”

Amy had a hand in all three of Penn State’s first half goals, collecting an assist and two goals. She assisted Ashtin Klinger at the 9:53 mark, before scoring with 13:33 and 14:31 on the clock.

Amy scored her third and final goal during the sixth minute of the second half, striking off a penalty corner via a Whitney Reddig assist.

Klinger rounded out the Nittany Lion offensive output, finding the back of the goal for a second time at the 59:54 mark.

Iowa got on the board when senior Jessica Barnett scored her team-high seventh goal during the 68th minute, trying her for the team-lead in points with 14.

Penn State’s Ayla Halus was the winning goalkeeper, as she made five saves. Senior Kathleen McGraw made 13 stops for the Hawkeyes, falling to 10-4 in goal this season.

Iowa will play its final two nonconference games of the regular season next weekend, hosting Kent State and Ball State at Grant Field. The Hawkeyes face Kent State on Oct. 20 at noon, and Ball State on Oct. 21 at 1 p.m. Both times are Central.
