Baseball America Recognizes Iowa Recruiting Class

Oct. 31, 2012

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Baseball America calls the University of Iowa baseball team’s freshmen class one of the best in the Upper Midwest/Great Plains region and in the Big Ten Conference.

The Hawkeyes have nine freshmen and a junior college transfer on the 2013 roster in Quinten Conrad (C/RHP), Jimmy Frankos (C/UTIL), Blake Hickman (C), Josh Martsching (SS/RHP), Calvin Mathews (RHP), Devin Pickett (IF), Jackson Raimo (RHP), Jack Richmond (LHP), Nick Roscetti (IF) and Trevor Kenyon (C).

Baseball America calls Hickman, a 6-foot-5 catcher/first baseman/right-handed pitcher “a physical specimen with a power arm and power bat.”

The publication also says Mathews and Martsching could be impact players.

“Mathews has an 89-92 mile per hour fastball with a good feel for his breaking ball,” Baseball America wrote. “Martsching could make a difference in the infield and off the mound.”
