THIS WEEK
The University Iowa men’s swimming and diving team hosts the Hawkeye Invitational on Friday through Sunday at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Pool. The competition will be prelims/finals format, with prelims starting at 10 a.m., and finals beginning at 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Prelims will begin at 10 a.m. and finals at 4 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is free of charge. The spectator entrance to the CRWC will open 90 minutes before the start of each session.
PARTICIPATING TEAMS
A total of five teams will compete in the men’s portion of the Hawkeye Invitational. Along with host Iowa, the field will include Denver, Michigan, Notre Dame, and Wisconsin-Milwaukee . Michigan is ranked No. 1 in the CSCAA poll that was released Nov. 21, Notre Dame is 19th, and Denver was receiving votes.
FOOD AND BEVERAGES
Concessions will be available at the Tropical Smoothie Café, which is located near the main entrance of the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center. Additional concessions will be provided by Iowa Memorial Union on the spectator level. As a reminder, all glass containers are prohibited in the CRWC Pool.

LAST MEET
The Hawkeyes dropped a 165.5-132.5 decision at 13th-ranked Minnesota on Nov. 2. Iowa posted victories in six events against the Golden Gophers. The Hawkeyes are now 1-1 on the season.
EVENT PROMOTIONS
Friday, Nov. 30 is “Hawks Nest Night”. The first 100 fans will receive Iowa t-shirts. Additionally, the first 25 fans can participate in the duck toss contest. The first contestant to get the duck in the inner tube will receive a $50 Visa gift card. Saturday Dec. 1 is “Junior Hawk Club Party and Elementary Night”, which will take place during the prelims at 10 a.m. The first 100 fans will receive Hawkeye sunglasses. Hawkeye fans can participate in the sponge pass to win a free pizza from Pizza Hut. Sunday, Dec. 2 is the “Gold Rush”. Hawkeye fans are encouraged to wear gold to the meet. The first 100 fans will receive gold poms. Hawkeye fans can register to win an Iowa swim cap autographed by coach Long.
IN THE RANKINGS
The Hawkeyes were ranked 21st in the Collegeswimming.com/CSCAA Coaches Poll that was released on Nov. 21. Iowa is one of seven Big Ten schools in the rankings, along with Michigan (1), Indiana (7), Minnesota (8), Ohio State (10), Penn State (23) and Purdue (24).
IOWA TIMES IN THE DIVISION I RANKINGS
The Hawkeyes rank among the top 50 nationally in four individual events and in two relays thus far in the 2012-13 season. – Senior Byron Butler’s 100 fly time of 47.97 is the ninth fastest time in the nation and an NCAA `B’ qualifying time. – Junior Dustin Rhoads and sophomore Grant Betulius both are in the top 41 in the 100 back. Rhoads ranks 24th (48.55), while Betulius is 41st (48.95). – Freshman Roman Trussov is 21st in the 100 breast (55.08) and 24th in the 200 breast (2:00.60). – The 400 free relay consisting of Brian Donatelli, David Ernstsson, Gianni Sesto and Jordan Huff has the 21st fastest time (2:59.78). – Betulius, Trussov, Mitch Taylor and Donatelli have the 24th-best time in the 200-medley relay, clocking in at 1:29.93.
B1G FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
Freshman Roman Trussov was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Nov. 6, after posting two first, one second and one fifth place finish in Iowa’s dual meet at 13th-ranked Minnesota on Nov. 2. Trussov took first place in the 100 breast (55.08) and 200 breast (2:00.60) and finished second in the 200 medley relay (1:29.93). The 100 breast time is an NCAA `B’ qualifying standard, while his 200 breast time of 2:00.60 is the sixth fastest in Iowa history. The freshman also swam a leg of the 200-medley relay that posted the 10th fastest time in the Hawkeye record books. Trussov is the first Hawkeye men’s swimmer to receive the honor.
UI 200 MEDLEY RELAY BREAKS POOL RECORD
The Iowa 200 medley relay consisting of Dustin Rhoads, Korey Schneider, Grant Betulius and Jordan Huff broke a three-year old pool record at Michigan State’s McCaffree Pool on Oct. 19.
RETURNING ALL-AMERICANS
The men’s squad returns senior Jordan Huff and junior Gianni Sesto who earned All-America recognition last season. Huff earned honorable mention All-America honors as a part of the 400 and 800 freestyle relays, while Sesto was an honorable mention All-American in the 200, 400 and 800 free relays.
B1G RELAYS
The Hawkeyes are coming off the 2011-12 season where they captured two relay titles and finished fifth at the Big Ten Championships, their highest finish in 16 years. Iowa won the relay titles in the 200 free (1:17.61) and 400 free (2:52.53) — the first Big Ten title since 1995.
ACADEMIC HONORS
Three members from the 2011-2012 men’s team were honorable mention Scholar All-Americans including returnees Byron Butler and Manuel Belzer and graduate Kyle Noser. The Scholar All-America award is presented to swimmers and divers who have maintained a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher during the semester or as their cumulative average, and those who have qualified for their respective national championship.
HEAD COACH Marc Long
Marc Long is in his ninth season as head coach for the University of Iowa swimming team. It’s his eighth as head coach of the combined program. During his tenure as head coach of both programs, 54 school records have fallen and 93 Hawkeyes have provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships.
COACHING ADDITIONS
Todd Waikel is in his first season as diving coach for the Hawkeyes. Waikel replaces long time UI diving coach Bob Rydze after serving as the assistant diving coach at Indiana for seven years. Kristy Brager joins program as an assistant coach, after coaching two seasons at George Mason University. She helped lead the men’s team to a pair of runner-up finishes in the Colonial Athletic Association. Iowa also added a pair of former Hawkeye All-Americans to the coaching staff in Paul Gordon and Ryan Phelan. Gordon is a student assistant, while Phelan is a volunteer coach.
CAMPUS RECREATION AND WELLNESS CENTER
Ground was broken for the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center in October 2007. The facility opened in August 2010 and is home for the Hawkeyes. It is located at the corner of Burlington and Madison streets and cost approximately $69 million. The facility includes a 50-meter competition pool, a separate diving well, a leisure pool with lap lanes and 24,000 square feet of fitness space.
IOWA SWIMMING AND DIVING TRADITION
Iowa was one of the first schools in the nation to compete on a collegiate level and competed at the first NCAA Championship. From 1937 to 1960, Iowa placed in the NCAA top 10 18 times, crowning nine NCAA and 22 Big Ten champions.
NEXT EVENT
The Hawkeyes return to action Dec. 17 when they travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., to take on Colorado College and Austin College. The meet will take place at Schlessman Natatorium beginning at 6 p.m. (CT).
