IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa men’s and women’s gymnastics teams opened the 2012-13 season with their annual Black and Gold Intrasquad on Sunday. The GymHawks divided into two teams and showcased their routines at the UI Field House. The Gold team won the event with a total score of 452.300, while the Black team tallied a 442.050.
“They did a phenomenal job,” said men’s head coach JD Reive. “This was just an icebreaker, get them out there, put some pressure on them, and let them show off where they are. It’s still very early in the season, but we hit a bunch of sets. They did what they do in practice. We’re looking for consistency from the week into the weekend, and they did that.”
“I was impressed,” said women’s head coach Larissa Libby. “We definitely have a lot of work to do. I think we can improve on beam because beam practice has been great for us. We need to make sure the girls are mentally prepared as far as environment change. Otherwise, we should be great.”
The men’s team crowned six event champions, including sophomore Lance Alberhasky (floor exercise), freshman Doug Sullivan (pommel horse), senior Anton Gryshayev (rings), freshman Matt Loochtan (vault) and senior Javier Balboa (high bar, parallel bars).
The event winners for the women’s team included sophomore Sydney Hoerr (vault), sophomore Emma Willis (vault, beam, floor), and senior Emma Stevenson (uneven bars).
The men’s team will open the 2013 campaign at the Windy City Invite on Jan. 19 in Chicago. The women’s team kicks off the season on Jan. 11, hosting Ball State at 7 p.m. at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
