Balboa, Gryshayev Named to B1G Watch List

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Two University of Iowa men’s gymnasts — Javier Balboa and Anton Gryshayev — appear on the 2013 Big Ten Gymnasts to Watch List, the conference announced Wednesday.

Balboa, a senior from Monterrey, Mexico, competes in the all-around for the Hawkeyes. He competed in every meet last season, excluding one due to injury, achieving 16 top-five finishes. Balboa is a two-time NCAA Championship qualifier. He placed 14th in the all-around at the 2012 NCAA Championships. Balboa holds Iowa’s parallel bars record with a score of 15.050, which earned him fourth place at the NCAA Qualifier in 2012.

Gryshayev, a senior from Littleton, Colo., owns the top five scores on rings in school history. He is a two-time NCAA Championship qualifier. Gryshayev placed 17th last year on rings at the NCAA Championships with a score of 14.550. He was named Big Ten Co-Gymnast of the Week (March 26, 2012), earning Iowa’s first weekly conference honor since 2009.

Balboa, Gryshayev and the Hawkeyes will open the 2013 season at the Windy City Invite on Jan. 19 in Chicago.
