Chuck Yagla: Honorary Captain

Dec. 31, 2012

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Former University of Iowa wrestling national champion Chuck Yagla will serve as honorary captain Friday when the Hawkeyes host Ohio State on Mediacom Mat inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Yagla, a native of Waterloo, Iowa, won the 150-pound NCAA championship in 1975 and 1976. His first individual title helped Iowa capture its first of 23 NCAA championships. The Hawkeyes defended the crown in 1976 when Yagla was named Iowa’s first Outstanding Wrestler of the NCAA Championships. He is one of 10 Hawkeyes to earn the honor.

Yagla owned a career record of 129-17-2 before graduating in 1976. He won the Big Ten title in his final two years of competition and, after college, was a member of the 1980 U.S. Olympic team. He helped Iowa captured four NCAA and four Big Ten championships as a member of Dan Gable’s coaching staff at Iowa from 1978-82.

His 44 career pins rank 10th in school history, and his 41 wins during the 1975-76 season tie for eighth most in a single season.

Yagla will be recognized prior to the start of the dual meet. Start time is 7:04 p.m. (CT).
