IOWA CITY, Iowa — THE SETTING
The University of Iowa women’s basketball team travels to Wisconsin to take on the Badgers Thursday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
IOWA HISTORY
Iowa has played 1,114 games since beginning basketball in 1974. Iowa’s overall record is 683-431 (.613). That includes a 341-171 (.666) mark in regular season Big Ten contests and a a 331-93 (.781) mark in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
SCOUTING WISCONSIN
The Wisconsin Badgers are 8-7 overall and 0-2 in Big Ten play. Wisconsin opened conference play with losses at Nebraska (70-52) and at home against Minnesota (60-55).
Minnesota outscored Wisconsin 24-10 in the paint and outrebounded the Badgers 44-29 in the five-point win. Morgan Paige led Wisconsin with 22 points. Jacki Gulczynski had 19 points and six rebounds.
Paige leads the Badgers with 16.5 points per game. Gulczynski is next at 11 points per contest. Cassie Rochel has a team-high 7.9 rebounds per contest.
As a team, Wisconsin is avearging 61 points per game and shooting 39.7 percent (335-of-843) from the field.
IOWA VS. WISCONSIN NOTES
? Iowa holds a 40-20 advantage in the all-time series. The Hawkeyes have won 10-straight matchups against the Badgers, dating back to the 2006-07 season. The Hawkeyes are 16-11 in Madison and have won the last four games at the Kohl Center, and eight of the last nine in Madison.
? Wisconsin junior Morgan Paige is from the same hometown as Iowa’s Jaime Printy (Marion, Iowa). Paige attended Marion HS, while Printy prepped at Linn-Mar HS.
? Iowa sophomore Bethany Doolittle and Wisconsin freshman Tessa Cichy both attended Hill-Murray High School in Minnesota. Doolittle is from Oakdale and Cichy is from Maplewood.
? Iowa sophomore Samantha Logic is from Racine, Wis., and attended Racine J.I. Case HS.
? Wisconsin Director of Operations Jill Jameson graduated from Northern Iowa in 1993 and was a three-year starter for the Panthers.
LAST MEETING
Iowa used a strong overtime effort to defeat Wisconsin, 85-79 (Feb. 2, 2012) in Madison. The Hawkeyes outscored the Badgers, 12-6, in the extra period.
The Hawkeyes held a 73-68 lead with 2:24 left in regulation, but two Wisconsin free throws and a 3-pointer with 1:10 remaining tied the contest.
Iowa scored the first four points in overtime but Wisconsin tied the score at 77 with 2:48 left. Iowa then netted eight-straight points to seal the win, including a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line by Samantha Logic.
Morgan Johnson scored 27 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, while Logic had 20 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists. Kamille Wahlin had 14 points, four rebounds and four assists.
WOLVERINES END IOWA’S WINNING STREAK
Michigan ended Iowa’s winning streak at seven games on Sunday, knocking off the Hawkeyes, 68-64. Michigan has now won eight-straight contests.
The Wolverines led by five at half and stretched the lead to as many as 13 with just over six minutes remaining. Iowa mounted a furious comeback, cutting the deficit to just two points with one minute left, but couldn’t get the go-ahed bucket.
Samantha Logic was one rebound and one assist shy of a triple-double, finishing with 16 points, nine rebounds and nine assists. Melissa Dixon led Iowa with 17 points off the bench and Theairra Taylor had 14 points.
HAWKEYES LIKE TO SHARE
? Iowa currently leads the Big Ten and ranks 19th in the NCAA with 17.2 assists per game. Logic also leads the Big Ten in assists at 7.1 per contest.
? The Hawkeyes have 275 assists on 410 made field goals this season (1.5 assist/field goal ratio).
LOGIC TAKING CARE OF THE BALL
Samantha Logic has lowered her turnovers while still dishing out numerous assists.
Through the first eight games of the season, Logic collected 54 assists to 46 turnovers (1.2 ratio).
In the last eight games, Logic has cut her turnover number nearly in half (25) and has recorded 59 assists. Her assist/turnover ratio over the last eight games has jumped to 2.4.
BIG NUMBERS OVER LAST SIX GAMES
? Over the last six games, Iowa is averaging 81.5 points per game and holds a +17.7 scoring margin.
? Iowa is shooting 49.2 percent (184-of-374) from the field and 39.3 percent (46-of-117) from 3-point distance.
BALANCING ACT
Iowa has had five different players lead, or share the lead, in scoring over the first 16 games of the season.
Morgan Johnson has paced the Hawkeyes in scoring eight times, Jaime Printy five times, Melissa Dixon three times, Theairra Taylor twice and Kathy Thomas once.
IOWA IN THE RANKINGS
Iowa is receiving votes in the latest ESPN/USA Today polls.
Six Iowa opponents are ranked in the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today polls: Penn State (8th/8th), North Carolina (11th/20th), Purdue (12th/11th), Florida State (18th/22nd), Iowa State (25th/25th) and Nebraska (RV/24th).
In addition, Michigan, Michigan State, Illinois and Ohio State are receiving votes.
HAWKEYES IN ELITE VICTORY COMPANY
Iowa is the only team in the country to have played at least four opponents ranked in the ESPN/USA Today poll and have an undefeated record against them.
IOWA CONTINUES TREND AGAINST RANKED FOES
? Iowa’s win over 12th-ranked West Virginia (Nov. 25) marked the 14th time under Lisa Bluder that the Hawkeyes have defeated a top-15 team.
? The Hawkeyes have recorded at least one win against a top-25 team in all but two seasons under Bluder. In nine of those seasons, Iowa has knocked off at least one top-15 opponent.
? West Virginia was the highest ranked opponent the Hawkeyes have defeated since knocking off No. 10 Michigan State (66-64) on Jan. 27, 2011.
? This season marks just the second time in school history that Iowa has defeated three ranked teams prior to Big Ten play (No. 12 West Virginia, No. 22 Iowa State, No. 20 Texas). The only other time Iowa knocked off three ranked opponents was in 1993 (No. 4 Louisiana Tech, No. 20 Missouri State, No. 9 Southern California).
? This season is only the sixth time in school history that Iowa played at least three ranked teams prior to conference action. Iowa faced five ranked opponents in 1990 (2-3 record) and three ranked school in 1999 (0-3), 1995 (2-1), 1993 (3-0) and 1989 (1-2).
? Iowa has now defeated four ranked teams, marking the first time since the 1995-96 season that the Hawkeyes have accomplished that feat (seven victories, 7-3 record versus ranked teams in 1995-96).
RPI AND STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE NOTES
? Iowa has an RPI of 20 (NCAA.com) and a strength of schedule of 13 (WarrenNolan.com). Iowa’s RPI is higher than eight teams inside the Associated Press Top 25 and six inside the ESPN/USA Today Top 25. The RPI is higher than all but one team receiving votes in the AP poll and all but two receiving votes in the ESPN/USA Today poll.
? Iowa’s strength of schedule is higher than 13 teams (including two top-10 teams) in the AP Top 25 and all teams receiving votes and higher than 15 teams (including two top-10 teams) and all teams receving votes in the ESPN/USA Top 25.
PERFECT DECEMEBER
Iowa went a perfect 6-0 in the month of December, knocking off two ranked opponents in the month. This is the fifth time in school history an Iowa team has recorded a perfect December, and the second time under Bluder (2004).
Vivian Stringer recorded three perfect December’s (1987, 1992, 1993).
BENCH PRODUCTION
Iowa’s bench is outscoring its opponents’ bench 272-203, this season. Hawkeye substitues are combining to average 17 points per game, while their opposition is averaging just 12.7 points per contest.
Iowa’s bench has scored 14 or more points in 11 of Iowa’s 16 games, including five games with at least 20 points.
HAWKEYES ON THE BLOCK
Iowa ranks second in the Big Ten and 13th in the NCAA in blocks per game at 5.9. Iowa is the only team in the Big Ten to block 10 shots in more than one game, having done it four times.
PRINTY CLOSE TO B1G FREE THROW RECORDS
? Jaime Printy currently owns an 88.6 career free throw percentage (379-of-428). Former Hawkeye Wendy Ausdemore holds the Iowa and Big Ten record for career free throw percentage at 89.2 (174-of-195).
? Printy is shooting 92.2 percent (71-of-77) for the season. The Big Ten single season record is 92.5 percent (99-of-107) by Indiana’s Cyndi Valentin.
MOVING UP CAREER CHARTS
? Morgan Johnson is Iowa’s all-time blocks leader (257), 10th in career rebounds (740) and 12th in career scoring (1,1360). She needs six more rebounds to move past Randi Peterson for ninth place and 80 more points to past Megan Skouby for 11th place.
? Jaime Printy ranks third in career 3-pointers made (225), sixth in career scoring (1,623) and eighth in career assists (359). She needs seven more 3-pointers to move past Kamille Wahlin for second place, 119 more points to move past Franthea Price for fifth place and nine more assists to move past Steph Schueler for seventh place.
? Samantha Logic ranks 17th in career assists (249). She needs four more assists to move past Kristi Faulkner for 18th place.
