BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The 18th-ranked University of Iowa men’s swimming and diving team dropped a pair of Big Ten duals to No. 6 Ohio State and No. 10 Indiana on Saturday at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatics Center. The Hawkeyes fell to the Buckeyes, 183-105, and to the Hoosiers, 172-126.
“We had some great swims. We won both relays against Indiana,” said UI head coach Marc Long. “I was disappointed we couldn’t pull off an upset against two top 10 teams, but we’ll learn from this and use it to get ready for Northwestern next weekend.”
Senior Jordan Huff paced the team, posting a quartet of top-three finishes. The Dubuque, Iowa, native won the 200 freestyle in 1:38.66 before finishing third in the 100 freestyle (45.13). Huff was also a member of the 200-medley and 400-free relay that posted runner-up finishes.
Sophomores Grant Betulius and Korey Schneider, senior Byron Butler and Huff opened the double dual with a second place finish in the 200 medley relay in 1:28.83. The time is the fifth fastest in Iowa history.
Huff also anchored the 400 free relay that earned a runner-up showing to conclude the meet with a time of 3:00.32. He was joined on the relay by sophomore Brian Donatelli, Betulius and freshman David Ernstsson.
Ernstsson, a native of Sweden, also posted a third place finish in the 200 free with a time of 1:39.25.
The Hawkeyes faired strong in the 100 breast, as three student-athletes placed among the top five. Schneider was the event runner-up in 55.38 seconds, while freshman Roman Trussov and junior Andrew Marciniak were fourth and fifth, respectively. Trussov swam a time of 56.13, while Marciniak touched in 56.64.
Trussov and Marciniak also were third and fifth in the 200 breast, finishing with timse of 2:03.03 and 2:04.38, respectively.
Junior Dustin Rhoads and Betulius both notched top-four showings in the 100 back. Rhoads, a Ames, Iowa native, was the runner-up in 48.66 seconds, while Betulius finished fourth in 48.96.
Butler recorded a pair of top-three finishes in the butterfly events. The senior finished second in the 100 fly in 48.72 and third in the 200 fly in 1:49.53. Iowa also got a fourth place showing by junior Tyler Lentz in the 200 fly (1:50.26) and a fourth place finish by freshman Jackson Allen in the 100 fly (49.98).
Allen also tallied a third place finish in the 50 free, sprinting to a time of 20.76, while Lentz was fifth in the 200-IM in 1:52.04.
Distance swimmer, junior Manuel Belzer, finished second and fourth, respectively, in the 500 and 1,000 free. Belzer finished with times of 4:29.54 and 9:22.87 in the two events.
Freshman diver Addison Boschult had a pair of personal-best scores in the 1 and 3-meter springboard events. The Omaha, Neb., native finished seventh in the 1-meter (325.13) and ninth in the 3-meter (341.78).
Iowa returns to action on Jan. 26, hosting Northwestern at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Pool. The dual is slated to begin at 11 a.m. (CT).
