IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa men’s tennis team competed in a dual meet double header on Friday at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. The Hawkeyes defeated Bradley 5-2 in the first meet and shutout Western Illinois 7-0 in the nightcap.

Jonas Dierckx, Matt Hagan, and Michael Swank all went 2-0 individually in the first meet, which helped Iowa hand Bradley their first loss of the spring season. Dierckx and Hagan competed together in doubles play and took down Albitar and Kalhorn of Bradley, 8-5. Dierckx carried that momentum into singles play and made quick work of Romanet defeating him in two sets 6-1, 6-2. Hagan also fed off his early momentum and took down Weerasinghe of Bradley, 6-4, 6-2 in No. 1 singles action.

Teaming up with Garret Dunn in doubles play, Swank defeated Abrams and Cuadrado of Bradley, 8-6. After having just competed against Abrams in doubles play, it was Swank and Abrams that battled it out in No. 6 singles action. After three long sets Swank came out on top, defeating Abrams 7-5, 2-6, 6-3.

In other singles action, freshman Dominic Patrick won his first singles match of the spring season defeating Kalhorn of Bradley, 7-6, 4-6, 6-1. Juan Estenssoro and Dunn both fell in their singles matches.

“Bradley gave us a tough match,” head coach Steve Houghton said. “I thought that we performed really well under pressure and got a good win as a result.”

The Hawkeyes squared off against Western Illinois in the second meet of the double header and kept up their strong play. Once again, Iowa started off fast winning all three doubles matches, gaining the doubles point. Dunn and Swank set the tone winning the No. 1 doubles match 8-5 over Hammers and Yue of Western Illinois.

Iowa excelled in singles action against the Fighting Leathernecks as all six Hawkeyes sealed a victory, needing only two sets to do so. Among the highlights, Hagan won his No. 1 singles match taking down Haertel of Western Ilinois, 6-0, 6-2. Additionally, Joey White saw his first singles action of the spring season and defeated Bunch of Western Illinois, 6-1, 6-4.

“While we did have Western Illinois outmanned, it was still a challenge to play a second match in the day,” Houghton said. “We handled that very well and as a result it was a real good day for us.”

Iowa returns to action Saturday, Feb. 9, when it hosts Creighton and Butler at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. Action against Creighton will begin at 9:30 a.m. while the meet against Butler will begin at 3:30 p.m.
