THIS WEEK:
Freshmen Matt Loochtan and Jack Boyle will travel to Las Vegas to compete in the Winter Cup Challenge on Thursday and Saturday. The rest of the Hawkeyes will host No. 6 Minnesota at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Friday, with action beginning at 1:00 p.m.
WINTER CUP CHALLENGE:
The 2013 Winter Cup Challenge will be held Feb. 7 and Feb. 9 at the Las Vegas Sports Center, with action beginning at 12:50 p.m. (CT) on Thursday and 7:05 p.m. (CT) on Saturday. The field of approximately 96 gymnasts will be divided into two preliminary sessions, with the top 42 athletes advancing to the finals. The top three gymnasts on each event based on the preliminary session scores (both sessions are combined) also advance to the finals. The all-around and individual event champions will be determined via a combined two-day score. The field for the Winter Cup includes current senior national team members and junior and senior qualifiers to the 2012 Visa Championships. Also invited are the top six in the all-around and the top two on each event based on the best scores from the following 2012 events: the finals at the Winter Cup Challenge; and the all-around or individual event finals at the USA Gymnastics Collegiate Championships, NCAA National Championships and the National Qualifier.
LAST TIME OUT:
No. 8 Iowa men’s gymnastics team fell to fourth-rated Oklahoma, 436.55-420.200, on Feb. 2 in its home opener inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Senior Anton Gryshayev took the still rings title for the second time this season with a score of 15.400. Sophomore Lance Alberhasky placed second in the all-around (83.600), followed by senior Javier Balboa in third place (80.100). The Sooners’ Alec Robin claimed the all-around title with an 85.400.
PARKING AT IOWA VS MINNESOTA MEET:
Parking for Friday’s meet will be available in Hospital Ramp 3 and Newton Road Parking ramp. Both ramps are located near Carver-Hawkeye Arena and require an hourly fee. Fans should not park in reserved faculty/staff areas. Those that do so are likely to recieve a ticket from the university parking office.
GRYSHAYEV RANKED NO. 1:
After winning rings at the Metroplex Challenge and Iowa’s dual against Okalahoma, Senior Anton Gryshayev was named No. 1 in the nation on still rings, released Monday by GymInfo. Gryshayev owns the top five scores in school history on the rings, breaking his own school record at the Metroplex Challenge on Jan. 26 in Fort Worth, Texas. His score of 15.800 was the highest of any of the events in the competition.
BIG TEN IN THE RANKINGS:
The Hawkeyes are currently ranked eighth by GymInfo. All seven Big Ten teams are ranked in the top 10. Penn State leads the way at No. 1, followed by Michigan (No. 2). Ohio State sits at fifth, while Minnesota (No. 6), Illinois (No. 7), and Nebraska (No. 9) join the Hawkeyes in the top 10.
HAWKEYES IN THE RANKINGS:
Iowa has two gymnasts ranked in the top ten nationally for individual events. Senior Anton Gryshayev locked in the No. 1 spot on still rings with an average of 15.450. Fellow classmate Javier Balboa is ranked No. 10 in the all-around with an average of 83.400. As a team, the Hawkeyes are ranked fourth on still rings (73.333), seventh on parallel bars (70.033), eighth on floor exercise (71.500) and vault (71.567), and 10th on high bar (68.533)
UP NEXT:
The Hawkeyes will travel to Champaign, Ill., to take on No. 6 Illinois on Feb. 16. The meet is set to begin at 4:00 p.m. at Huff Hall.
