IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa field hockey team earned the Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division I National Academic Team Award for the third-straight year, the organization announced Tuesday.

The award recognizes institutions that have achieved a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher during the first semester of the 2012-13 academic year.

Eight Hawkeyes have also been named to the 2012 Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Collegiate National Academic Squad. The squad is comprised of student-athletes who achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher through the first semester of the 2012-13 academic year.

Seniors Sarah Drake and Kathleen McGraw, juniors Niki Schultheis, Marike Stribos, redshirt sophomore Danielle Peirson, sophomores Brynn Gitt and Sara Watro and freshman Liz Leh all received the honor. Drake and McGraw have earned the distinction in each of their four seasons and are two of 14 four-year honorees in the Big Ten. Schultheis, Stribos and Peirson received the honor a third time, while Gitt and Watro are two-time honorees.

“Our team represents so well in the classroom,” said UI head coach Tracey Griesbaum. “We take pride in our academic achievements, and this is a great reward for all the hard work they put into their studies. “

Nearly 40 percent (eight out of 21 team members) were selected to the national academic squad. Iowa has had eight student-athletes named to the squad in each of the past three seasons — the most for the program over the last seven years.
